Writing Exercise: Randomly Generated Stories

Let’s try a bit of a challenge to get those creative juices flowing!

When you’re ready, click here to go to Reedsy’s random plot generator. Select your genre, generate a random plot, and challenge yourself to write a synopsis for a story idea. Aim for 1500 words, and focus on fleshing out your cast, a beginning, middle and end to your story. Here’s the trick though; you HAVE to use the randomly generated plot that’s given to you first try!

If you want an additional challenge, try doing this a few times. You can try different genres that might be something you wouldn’t usually go for.

You’d be shocked at how well your brain can piece together a story from so little. And hey, who knows, you might just strike upon the idea for your next big project!

How’d you go? Leave a comment with your randomly generated idea and the plot that your built it into, or discuss how this exercise went for you. Was it a challenge? What did you notice you struggled with or found easy?
